After a LOT of pondering I am finally in a position to give it a run out this weekend.
I had an used base cloth, see below, so the plan was to build terrain up on hexes here are a few of the Hills to show the basic process.
A view of the terrain I have so far set up, as you can see I can varry the size of the table from the size of a C&C board up to 6x4 foot table and I can use the black edging to delineate the edge of the battlefield as required.
A closer view of the hills, as needed I can build more terrain, but I have enough to get me started.
A couple of shots with figures, I plan to use the set up at a range of different scales above multi based 28mm late Romans
My SYW collection, flexibility as always is the aim so I can use much of the same terrain as in normal battles
Here is our first battle set up the Battle of Bairen, El Cid taking on the Almoravids, thinking ahead I think almost all of my collections could be adapted to play on this style of terrain, I quite like the idea of some WW2 at some stage as 15mm would quite effective on a ‘grand’ scale ?
I know this won’t be to everybody’s liking but don’t worry hexes won’t take over the dungeon just yet π
Cool,3D hexes are the future, especially for campaign mapsπ
ReplyDeleteThey are perhaps part of the future they give a different feel and work well for remote games π
DeleteThat is coming together nicely Matt. Jonathan's setup is the first time I had really seen this in use outside of a boardgame, and I can definitely see the atraction. Lovely work.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence a different feel and look but different doesn’t mean worse hoping it gives a good battle watch for next post π
DeleteMatt, this is to my liking! Your results are brilliant, and I look forward to giving this setup a run through on Sunday. I find hexes make remote play much easier with much less fuss.
ReplyDeleteWell you know the answer π
DeleteLooks great Matt. Hex or gridded games are not my favourite but I have played quite a lot of To the Strongest and the ECW version, as well as a lesser number of CnC games on a hex table with figures. Our mate and host Julian is quite keen on TtS in particular and in terms of movement and firing ranges etc, it certainly cuts out any "discussions" about whether a target is in range or not etc! For remote gaming like you and Jon have been doing, it would certainly make things much easier to manage.
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith I think given preference I would agree but having watched and taken part in a number of hexed games (Jonathan’s set up) I have seen the obvious advantages. This won’t be replacing other games but gives a really interesting alternative option.
DeleteI often use hexed matts. Great to use and no need for arguments about range, flanks etc
ReplyDeleteIt works for me Neil under the right circumstances π
DeleteMatt, that is a fine opening to the project. Are those 4” hexes?
ReplyDeleteThanks norm they are 80 mm I was looking for a compromise on size and flexibility for my based units so I can use them at a wide range of scales, I believe I can get a reasonable battle with 28mm, 15mm 10mm and 6mm. So lots and lots of options π
DeleteThat’s rubbish they are 100mm as I wanted to be able to get two 40 mm bases in comfortably. I remember now π
DeleteGreat looking table!
ReplyDeleteThanks John check out battle in next post
DeleteGrids, hexes...it reminds me of the first real war games I played in at Charlie Sweets house in the early '70's. Squares across the board and special rules for flank attacks. "Zone' movement always made the games faster. Nice looking, your areas well.
ReplyDeleteThanks it has never been my preference but I am being converted to this as an alternative π
DeleteNot to my taste, lacks the visual appeal of your usual splendid games. Mind, remote gaming is something I'd not contemplate as you know.
ReplyDeleteProbably not my preference either David but it is opening up some really interesting options for gaming especially as you say remotely. Who knows now you are delving into 15mm plastics…….anything could happen !
DeleteHa! Have to try playing at hexes someday!
ReplyDeleteGive at a go Michal you never know π
DeleteI can see the appeal of hex based games, which certainly come into the own for remote games, ditto naval and air ones too. Something to ponder for the future for sure.
ReplyDeleteI am certainly looking at options, I haven’t used my WW2 air combat collection for ages and this will give a good option with some slightly amended rules ? Need to think about that π
DeleteLooking good there Matt, hexes are certainly a great aid to remote play.
ReplyDeleteThey have their benefits π
DeleteNice work, Matt. I agree that hexes (or something similar) will make movement, ranges, etc. easier for remote playing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean we played our first game and it worked well so look out for the post it 5 mins π
DeleteI don’t mind hexes. I even like hexes for certain genres like age of sail or space ships. Seeing hexes does push it more towards a miniature board game look rather than a miniature war game (if that makes sense) but as I enjoy both it doesn’t bother me.
ReplyDeleteThough people always say that it cuts down on arguments about ranges and such but I can’t ever remember having a heated discussion on such a thing. π
Thanks Stew they give a different feel to the game and yes I know what you mean about the board game feel although may not be a bad thing ? We don’t have many arguments in the dungeon but we also won’t need to get the ruler out in these games π
DeleteNice post, the Hexes do make for interesting remote gaming, we had several outings of the old standard games - Cry Havoc game, whilst more skirmish it did get me thinking??? - hhhhmmmm ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Stu it has made me think about lots of different playing and game options variety is no bad thing π
DeleteNice one Matt, I imagine it must aid the players in calculating distances with remote gaming.
ReplyDeleteNot everyone’s taste Pat but yes it makes remote gaming a little easier and gives options around scale as well making it easier to scale up to larger battles. Flexibility and viariety is what I enjoy π
