For our next battle in the Dungeon we have jumped back to Norway 1940, mainly as I had the early war Germans still out of their box. As I still only have a smallish number of Norwegians I wanted to support them with British. We have previously looked at the Battle of Kvam following the magazine article in WSS. However, as the Germans moved north along the Gudbrandsdal Valley brushing the Norwegian defenders aside the British were landing at Andalsnes and heading SE until they met the retreating Norwegians at Kvam. The basis for todays battle is the British have managed to move further down the valley to link up with the remaining Norwegians at Fåberg. Here they will try and hold the advance.

Norway 1940 : The Gudbrandsdal Valley
A map of the Gudbrandsdal valley, I am still learning more about the Norwegian campaign so hope to build in some more historical battles ? Thoughts welcome
The scenario has the Norwegian forces on the table roughly half way across, the British will come on from behind them with artillery support, the Germans must force their way across the table, the Norwegians have the choice to hold and be overwhelmed or give ground as they pull back.
First turn and some of the Norwegians are already pulling back, but some are taking fire
The German force consists of veteran mountain Gebirgsjager
View across the valley, the river is frozen so crossable on foot
The British are supported by one the few remaining Gloster Gladiators this may help to pin the advancing Germans in the open
A view across the whole battlefield, about 5 x 6 foot
Close up shot of the Gebirgsjager advancing through the snow
The last two Norwegian units holding their ground take a real battering and are pinned in position unable to retreat
German armour advancing down the road PzII, the Neubaufahrzeug Heavy Tank and a SdKfz222
The British artillery armed with 25mm Hotchkiss guns have opened up and knock out the armoured car which bursts into fire
The gloster continues to circle above the trees whilst the PzII advances towards the village,
the Gebirgsjager have now taken the area around the log piles
The rest of the German infantry have jumped from their trucks and the Neubaufahrzeug has pulled to the right
Norwegian infantry have pulled back to take cover and are now supported by the British
The Gebirgsjager now assault and knock out the Madsen machine gun
A wider shot showing the general advance but the Germans need to push forward
The Germans storm the building, but have still not gained enough ground
The PzII is also pushing up threatening to over run the British behind
Then a lucky shot from one of the German MG34 hits the Gloster which is forced to fly off
Finally and luckily for the Germans an extra turn is rolled for and they make a final push forward, the victory line being beyond the first building.
It has cost the Germans to break through but we agreed a minor victory to them as at least one active infantry unit was over the line. You can’t see it in this picture but the Neubaufahrzeug took a hit and blew up in the final turn so the Pz II is the only remaining German armour.
A good battle all round hard fought to the last turn but Lady Luck was with the Germans the British will have to withdraw back to Kvam.
Just to show the views are not always great in the Lake District a rainy day last Friday thick cloud and only a few yards visibility on the tops but refreshing all the same 👍
We are hopefully off to Vapnartak this weekend in search of new toys so any followers who’d are attending and are interested in saying hi let me know
Thanks as always for taking the time to look
Matt

Super looking game and an interesting action. Cool that you got the airplane into the game. Doubly cool to see your Neubaufahrzeug making an appearance. I seem to recall only two present in theatre and you blew one up! Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteYour hike looks cold.
Thanks Jon some debate on the number of N tanks but I have read three but one broke down quite early on ? May well be some by magic appear in Operation Sealion some time ?

Bloody "Dame Glück" is right Matt - thats the second game recently where the dreaded Bosch have scraped home to a last minute win....great looking table and figures/vehicles etc of course!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith as you say they snatched victory again. About turn 5 there was a real moment of opportunity for the Norwegians but they needed to be lucky. What I really needed was the antitank rifle to take out the PzII abut that just wasn’t happening 🙁
DeleteLovely game as usual Matt, and great to see the Norwegians in action even if they did narrowly lose.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence good indeed to get them on the battlefield.
DeleteFantastic looking scenario as always sir!
ReplyDeletenice game and the weird tank looks cool
ReplyDeleteThanks Martin 👍
DeleteI originally thought the game was going to be a German walkover, but that tight ending, based on the extra turn show it to be quite finely balanced.
ReplyDeleteThe balance for the Germans was rush forward before they had knocked the Norwegians out or wait and it did give a good balanced battle. A simple scenario really but worked well
DeleteOh - and re your spammer above, I am plagued by the same every couple of days, I have now twice contacted Google (incl this morning) asking them to make the anti-spam tool more effective, so that when a poster is marked ‘spam’ it stops them returning to the blog - that’s how it used to work.
ReplyDeleteYes very annoying they seem to be the only one I get regularly, i am really loath to go down the ‘comment approval’ route as that kind of annoys me. I certainly haven’t found a way to stop them so I just delete it and shrug my shoulders 🤨
DeleteMatt, I have just returned home from Smiths and they have the latest WWS which has a Norway scenario in it based on a 2 day mini campaign.
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm I was in on Saturday but they didn’t have a copy so I will seek it out 👍
DeleteMight see you at York
ReplyDeleteWell if you see me say hello 👍
DeleteGreat looking battle, Matt. Love the look and feel of Early-War, and this scenario certainly has this.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I get that "Ratana" spam every so often too - I wish there was a "block" function.
Thanks Dean (putting aside all the obvious political stuff) I love the early war Germans as their kit and armour is so iconic, the benefit is of course you can fight in several different places.
DeleteAnother excellent looking game Matt and loved the Gloster Gladiator getting in on the action:). H O Lunde's book 'Hitler's Pre-Emptive War' has some good information regarding possible actions that might transfer well to the wargames table. I'll have a check and pm you later on.
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve as it happens I have that book as an audio book it is excellent and does have some great ideas for scenarios. My problem is I don’t have the text to read and pin point the relevant sections to go back to.🙂
DeleteFine reportage and cracking game pics Matt. Have a good visit to York I am sure you will sniff out some bargains🙂
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil I don’t expect to come home empty handed !
DeleteAnother fantastic looking game Matt…
ReplyDeleteI am trying very hard to resist the early war… but you are not making it easy.
I’ve been to Andalsnes it is stunningly beautiful… you would love it.
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly, the early war has many interesting aspects, for me the benefits of having early Germans is then can take on a wide range of theatres, making expansion and future collecting slightly less intimidating. Would love to go to Norway one day perhaps ?
DeleteSuperb looking game and a close run thing
ReplyDeleteThanks Neil yes it went down to the final turn the Norwegians had a chance but the dice blew it !
DeleteWhat a splendid looking game Matt!
ReplyDeleteThanks David 👍
DeleteAnother fantastic looking table & report. I am curious, are you using 1/72 or 1/48 scale aircraft? My desire to snag some aircraft for my own eventual gaming. I am leaning towards getting 1/48 scale ones for myself as they can then be used as scenery on the table too
ReplyDeleteThanks Terry, spot on on the scale I have always gone for 1/48 to give the option of using planes as terrain. It does make them expensive and a little harder to store. But they are nice 👍 secret is look out on eBay they come up eventually at a reasonable price
DeleteLooks too cold to fight (I like the snow cover) and too cold to be outside. 😀
ReplyDeleteYes Stew cold on both fronts 👍 but at least on the mountain is was fine rather than snow
DeleteGood looking game, nice to see these backwater battlefields being played on our tabletops!
