A second game this week in the dungeon so a quick turn around. Looking for something we could play in an evening I dipped into Brad Butkovich’s Chickamauga scenario book. This is a what if scenario as historically it was only an artillery duel before the Confederates chose to pull back. But what if Breckinridge had pushed into a full assault to try and drive away the Union 2nd Division under James S Negley. The scenario is a good size three brigades a piece with supporting artillery.
I shrunk the table down a bit so we would get into action quickly. The woods are light so give cover but don’t reduce visibility, I also ignored any movement penalty for crossing fences to get things moving. Helm’s brigade can be seen already across the Chickamauga Creek. For the Union Beatty is deployed around the farm and off in the distance Stanley’s Brigade. We would be using V&F which allows pretty quick and flexible movement.
We were straight into the action with Adam’s Brigade marching on immediately.
Beatty’s brigade around the farm house and orchard
The confederates have a numerical advantage on the table at the start so it is upto them to get stuck in before the Union reserves arrive. Their artillery opens up as well
The confederates quickly negotiate the fields and woods to get into range of the Union defenders.
Initial skirmishing as the two lines pull closer together
Unfortunately in the distance the Union 3rd Brigade under Sirwell has already arrived !
It’s now going to be a tough one but the Confederates have the numbers still, they ride their luck and charge in ?
Around the farm the battle is descending into a shooting contest, both sides firing volleys at full pace, both sides are taking casualties but not yet decisive
Across the road Stanley’s brigade is so close to breaking, but they manage to pull back behind their reserves just in time. This leaves the confederates facing a fresher Brigade and being hit from more than one direction…..the inevitable happens
The Confederates break, Adam’s Brigade first who have taken the brunt of the fighting along the road. Helm’s brigade although technically still on the table is being cut to pieces by the Farm and only had two Regiments still fighting. The assault is over and Breckinridge concedes the day. A Union victory which will please some I’m sure. A fun battle it was close for a while but with hindsight…….The forces are too balanced for a frontal assault, should we play this again I will delay the Union reserves longer to put them under more pressure , just a bit too easy for them to sit back and wait.
No more holiday photos this time, although I have plenty !
Thanks as always for checking in on our dungeon activity.
I’m off to London next weekend so won’t be at the other Partizan. I’m sure it will be fun for those who do go…enjoy 👍
Matt ❤️
That's a nice setup, Matt!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray 👍
DeleteExcellent presentation, Matt! Breckenridge should have stuck to an artillery duel! Don't hold back on travel photos on my account. I love 'em!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon, I think staying in position would have been a good call but the scenario sets them the challenge of breaking through. I might just manage a few more photos
DeleteA nice run-out with the Blue & Grey! table looks superb. Would random activation of brigades helped bring some chaos into the game, to help push it one way or the other?
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm, indeed the Union need something to disrupt them, the delaying of the reserves would seem to be the easiest option if we play it again
DeleteLovely looking game Matt
ReplyDeleteThanks Neil 👍
DeleteAs Jonathan says, would an extended artillery barrage have softened things up to make it easier for the Confederates? The usual beautiful table Matt.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence, a barrage would certainly have helped 👍
DeleteLovely stuff Matt.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chris
DeleteMagnificent looking game- great AAR too!
ReplyDeleteThanks John
DeleteA good looking tabletop and interesting game.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Peter it was just the right size for an evening gaming 👍
DeleteSuperb looking battle Matt, table and figures look the business, good read too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie always fun to get the ACW on the table
DeleteA nice-looking game Matt but as you say, forces are too balanced - any rational military leader is looking for a 3:1 advantage before attacking!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, you hit the nail on the head , the confederates need something else to support the attack 👍
DeleteCheers, I do spend quite a lot of time just messing about doing nothing 🙂
ReplyDeleteAnother great looking game!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michal 👍
DeleteGreat looking game, long odds for the rebels to achieve much, tough game but still sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain the odds were against me but fun indeed 👍
DeleteSplendidly inspiring stuff there Matt. Enjoy your trip!
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil 🙂
DeleteSuperb looking game there Matt:)! One day I might get some of Brad's scenario books for inspiration. As you say, for a replay the Union side needs a tweak to give those Rebs a chance. Enjoy London!
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve, I have found Brads books very good, with enough detail to allow me to adapt scenarios to our own scale table size etc…
DeleteThat table looks really impressive, and it sounds like a grand evening game. Have a brilliant trip to London!
ReplyDeleteAll the best, Andy
Many thanks Andy hopefully some culture in the capital 🤔🍺
DeleteCulture and a proper pint sound like the perfect combination! Enjoy every minute of it, Matt!
DeleteAll the best, Andy
Another game! Very similar to a JR2 scenario I have fought several times.
ReplyDeleteThanks George will catch up soon I m not aware of the scenario you mention ?
DeleteA grand game with the right outcome of course. Sorry you are missing TOP, but enjoy London!
ReplyDeleteThanks David a fun game. Hopefully you have a good time at Partizan 👍
DeleteExcellent looking game as always Matt and beautifully photographed too. That early one of the Confederates advancing en masse looked imposing, but so too did the Union reinforcements. You really need at least 2:1 to the attacker in this period don't you?
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, James
Thanks James a fun battle, the ACW is easy to photo really 🙂 and I agree the confederates needed more on this occasion
