Battle of Stowting : Operation Sealion

For our first game in the New Year a return to the Sealion campaign. The Germans are now driving North towards Canterbury up Stone Street the old Roman road. But with the amount of traffic restricted some columns have been forced to explore using some of the parallel side roads. One of these heads through Stowting where the British are looking to breakthrough and cut the German advance north.

A few special elements for the scenario. The Germans first wave in transport trucks are randomly strung out along the road through Stowting. The British will assault from the West/left. Germans reserves will only be able to arrive from one of the three roads. The objective for the British is to cut the road….the British also have two Homeguard units which are deployed again randomly in buildings along the edge of the road in ambush. The Germans have one hidden sniper on the table who needs to be spotted before he can be targeted.
The setup with the Germans now randomly deployed along the road,
Some of the Germans only just make it onto the table
The British advance with armour
From the North
As the British advance the German infantry jump out of their trucks, in the foreground the infantry have driven a unit of homeguard out of the small brick building
Brits spreadout into the back gardens
The leading Germans take up a defensive position around the church
British advance through Stowting Court towards the main road
Two German panzers manage to knock out the leading British tank as it moves towards the church
A Stug moves around the church
The second hidden homeguard were in the ‘white house’ but after snipping at the enemy German Pioneers are sent to sort them out
The British Beaverette enters the fray but is pinned down
British tanks move around the flank driving the Germans towards the centre of the table
They are followed up by British infantry
Who are then eventually able to cut the road. The battle came to a natural halt we judged it a minor British win, the Germans still have some fight left in them but the British have knocked out much of their infantry and have managed to cut the road 👍
Another fun game……

After some tidying up in the Dungeon I came across this old magazine at the bottom of a box. Great fun flicking through and amazing how I immediately remember all the pictures and articles ?

That’s it for now, we are heading to Vapnartak at the weekend so if anybody is going happy to catch up for a chat. I will also be selling off a few bits of unwanted stuff. And no doubt looking for a few bargains.

Thanks as always

Matt ♥️

  1. A grand return to Zeelöwe and a British win to boot! Sadly not going to Vapnartak, it's had its time as far as I'm concerned. I'll do WMMS, and the Partizans while I can, maybe Colours.

    1. Thanks David, York has become something of a yearly pilgrimage now as it’s up here in the North. But hopefully I will make at least one of the Partizans this year ?

    1. Thanks Keith (not so little 🙂) but yes the Brits haven’t had a win for a while…definitely related to which side I’m commanding.

  9. Nice to see a minor British win as they have been getting the worst of it in the campaign so far, which I suppose is to be expected. I love the cover of the old magazine. Makes me want to put on a jumper, pull the collar up and get out my old Minifigs.

  12. As always an excellent game there Matt and nice to see a minor British victory. Maybe this is the high water mark of the German advance?

    1. Thanks Steve ….high watermark seems unlikely to me as which ever side wins each battle the German advance moves onward !

  13. Hi Matt - Nice Seelowe game. I assume your aware that the TV documentary about "Churchill's Secret Army", namely the Auxiliary Units is on TV every Tuesday afternoon on Talking Pictures & also available to catchup on the TPTV encore website at https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/search/churchill as for my Battle magazines & Military Modelling from the 1970's & 80's they are still in a cardboard box. Initially kept for those wonderful Charles Grant "Tabletop Teasers" but recently came across Steve The Wargamer blog where you can download all 34 Tabletop teaser scenarios from his website. Which saved me searching through all those old magazines. https://steve-the-wargamer.blogspot.com/p/word-document-jpgs-of-original-article.html

    1. Thanks John, no wasn’t aware of the TV series but then I’m not a big T V watcher, I’ll see if I can track it down ? The magazine certainly has one of those teaser in it 👍

  15. What a lovely set up Matt! I'd love to start an Op Sealion project in the future... but heck if I need yet another WW2 project!

    1. Heck indeed 😀 I have found that wargamers either love or hate WW2 if you love it you probably can’t get enough and the depth and scope of WW2 for gaming is so fantastic. With about six WW2 projects I may have enough as well. Sealion has been my longest running project though and continues to give fun and enjoyment 👍
