Two battles so far this week with another in the diary for Saturday. First up another trip down to George to continue our Chain of Command campaign. If not ready I’m sure George will post on this battle so really just a couple of photos from me and the broad outline.
The British must try and blow the two fuel dumps next to the road using engineer teams. The Germans must stop them, not a very promising scenario setup for the Germans as they only get 3 points of support more than the British defenders and the way the patrol phase is set up the British are guaranteed the majority of the cover.
Anyway the Germans get stuck in as best they can, both sides have a tank and after many misses the the British A4 goes up in flames
The British in the orchard as the German attempt (foolishly) to approach across the open ground
The British manage to blow one fuel dump, in fact it turns into a very close battle, ruthless German shooting targeting the British commander who mistakenly found himself isolated and out in the open brings their morale right down to 1 giving them only 2 command die. The Germans are clinging on with a morale of 3, but in the end the British turn the tables killing a German senior leader and the rest of the Germans are forced to retreat. The butchers bill was high though with the British taking very heavy casualties we’ll find out soon what this means for the campaign ?
Next up another remote game with Jon, to mix things up I set up an ACW scenario using R&P. This is broadly based on the fight for the Pitzer Woods early on 2nd July at Gettysburg. The main reason for choosing this of course was I thought it would be fun to get my Berdan Sharpshooters onto the table in a skirmish game and with R&P it is easy to give them the appropriate stats.
I found this map on the internet and used it for the basis of the skirmish
My terrain, the Staub Farm to the right.
The 3rd Maine advance quickly to support the Sharpshooters, their objective is to scout five markers before they are beaten back.
They are up against the 10th and 8th Alabama support by a strong screen of skirmishers
Initially all seems to go well for the Rebels who advance to shooting range and try to close the distance to negate the longer range of the Berdan sharpshooters.
The fire fight kicks off across the table and especially in the open ground
Forces trade colleges across the Staub farmstead where one of the objectives is situated
Somehow things gradually started to go wrong for the Rebels, initially they fail a couple of morale checks and a couple of units become disordered. But with the Union forces keep rolling above a average and suddenly the Rebels start to fail all their tests.
Things quickly go sideways and the whole rebel forces breaks and flees back to their main line.
A fun game despite the disappointing result for the rebels, I had thought it would be a tough ask for the Federals but in the end with the complete collapse of the rebel morale it was almost a walk over, I think I failed at least 6 morale tests rolling less than 3 on two dice ! So there is no scenario design that can cope with that.
Berwick upon Tweed the beautiful 16th century defences around the town.
Plenty of cycling out in the lakes
Dunbar where the restored 18th Century gun bastion over looks the two historic harbours and the very dilapidated Dunbar castle, seen here in the distance where the flag is.
More hot weather encouraged me to spend a day walk a chunk of Hadrians wall, luckily there was a nice breeze.
The views really were stunning.
Well that’s it for now, unfortunately since I started this post it looks like my battle tomorrow has been postponed, but another game is planned for Monday anyway. Then in a weeks time I’m off on my travels again across Europe gorging on military history.
Thanks for checking by
Matt 🙂
Two splendid looking and exciting games under the belt there Matt topped off with fine outdoor shots, you always get a great depth of, field in your shots.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil, the landscape up near Hadrians wall certainly has depth when the sun is out 👍
DeleteGrand photos of your outdoor adventures. Two fine looking games too!.
ReplyDeleteThanks David, more adventures to come hopefully
DeleteStunning landscape photos! Do you cycle up and down those hills? Leg breakers! I enjoyed our ACW game. Probably more than you! Your morale rolling was abysmal. Your Rebs could not pass a morale check to save their lives. Well, failing those morale checks actually DID save some of their lives! Good fun. Exactly right that poor dice can damage a well-drafted scenario. Enjoy your travels. By the way, this post still has not shown up on my blogroll at 3:30pm BST.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon, the road goes upto the end of the valley but no further. It’s walking or very serious mountain biking from there. At least the Union know the rebels are about to attack but it might not change sickles mind ?
DeleteNo idea about the posting delays not in my control ?
DeleteEhhh, blogger again...
ReplyDeleteGreat to see (at least) a great report!
Thanks Michael 👍
DeleteNice ACW game Matt, I am back to ACW next week with Erik.
ReplyDeleteThanks George a fun skirmish in ACW for a change.
DeleteTwo great looking games Matt and enjoy your trip
ReplyDeleteThanks Neil 👍
DeleteGreat looking games Matt, both of them look superb both tables and figures. Cracking photos of your travels too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie, two fine games to play as well 🙂
DeleteTwo beautiful tables. I have just mentioned on Jon's blog that I am wondering about the merits of R&P as it often seems to deliver a one sided game, yet the entertainment and playability aspects are high. Is that a fair observation?
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm, I think they might be valid comments on the rules. We have obviously played them a fair amount and had many enjoyable battles. The key with getting the most from the rules is scenario design which of course is not always easy. I was particularly unlucky in this game, with several units being disordered very early. We have obviously stretched the ruleset way beyond their design, the standard points being set at 24, even in this battle we had 48 points each with larger units as well. They are after all designed as a quick a small scale skirmish rule.
DeleteThanks Matt, I had the rules, sold them and then re-bought!
DeleteTwo great looking games Matt. The WW2 tale really got going, great fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks Michael fun games 👍
DeleteHi Matt,
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff! Two grand-looking tables and some brilliant scenic shots from out on the trail. As I mentioned over on Jonathan's blog when replying to his report, those Berdan Sharpshooters were absolute killers on the day, but your setup at Staub Farm looked fantastic regardless. Tricky luck on the morale tests, but it made for a top read!
All the best, Andy
Many thanks Andy, I set the whole scenario to get the Berdan sharpshooters on the table as they don’t normally have much of an impact, so despite the outcome it was nice to see them in action. Certainly my very poor morale rolling didn’t help the outcome 😥
DeleteThey definitely made an impression! Mission accomplished on getting them into the thick of it. Hopefully your luck with the morale dice turns around for the next fight!
DeleteAll the best, Andy
Two games fir one click. Awesome looking tables, troops and scenarios. You are right about the scenario generation can not hold back multiple poor rolls.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Joe, scenario design is always important …but some average rolling would have been nice too
DeleteYou certainly took your UK Hols in the right part of the country to avoid this unseasonably hot summer. And now a European tour gorging on Military History, you have have it made. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteI liked the CoC game, and will be interested to see whose Butcher's Bill will bite them the harder in the ongoing campaign.
Thank Rob, we did have a very hot spell earlier in the year when down in Gloucester but the weather in Edinburgh was very nice. Hopefully the weather in Europe will be balanced ? I’m sure George will let me know how many British are left ?
DeleteTwo great games Matt although you seemed to get the worst of the dice luck in both, particularly the morale rolls for the Reb! Your various travel destinations are all very nice, I would particularly like to walk a portion of Hadrian's wall (and Offas Dike, if I had the opportunity) but it seems unlikely. Looking forward to seeing where your European touring takes you next - you are certainly living your best life!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, I can highly recommend both walks, Hadrians wall perhaps slightly easier to get to so I know it better. The dice gods have seen fit to honour me this afternoon so I can’t complain ☺️
DeleteTwo great games there on the visual front Matt, ditto some nice shots of your trips around the UK. Your morale rolls seem as bad as mine;)! Enjoy your trip abroad and look forward to seeing what you've been up to in due course:).
