28mm German U boat

Well the title pretty much says it….

This is the Empress model I picked up secondhand at the Border Reivers show at the start of September. The crew aren’t quite finished but the main challenge was putting the anti aircraft guns together. The main body also needed a little work to ensure a snug fit for the base. The boat will make its first appearance at Battleground show where I am putting on a participation game. It is a lovely model and a very indulgent piece of terrain. Luckily it fits in a fairly small box.

Thanks as always

Matt😀

  2. Excellent model and glad they made it sections, mainly due to being able to print it 'easily'. Look forward to seeing what you do with it scenario wise...

    1. Thanks Steve….storage is the main challenge for me so the fact it fits into a small shoebox really helps

  5. What a beaut! That is going to make for a very interesting scenario. Have you done Battleground before? It is on my list.

    1. Thanks Norm not surprisingly the scenario involves landing troops. In answer to the question re Battleground, yes we go most years, and I have often put on a small participation game. It is a good opportunity to get some early Christmas presents

  8. Shades of "Das Boot" there, Matt - funnily enough, I recently saw a 3D printed waterline Unterseeboot model somewhere for a very reasonable price - like 20 euros or something similar - it did make me pause for thought - could be a great asset in a Pulp game.....hhmmmmmm :)

    1. Thanks Keith I think if it had been full price I wouldn’t have bought it but it was very reasonable secondhand. It needed to be cheap as it isn’t really going to get used that often !

  9. That's a substantial model there! I got my U boat and crew from Brigade Games at Historicon, it's a more manageable tabletop size.

    1. Thanks Aly….now I do have a flying boat although it hasn’t been made yet and I’m struggling to fit a scenario that uses both of them into my normal gaming spaces !

Looking great and I'm totally agreeing with Martin - I wish it was mine :) Might just pop along to Battleground at the end of the month, just to see this model.

If I can say? (Not wanting to hijack Matt's blog) Norm, Battleground is the show I certainly would recommend. I've attended as a participation game helper, a trader with Col. Bill's, and a member of the public, and the Pengilley's (Pendraken Miniatures) are excellent hosts. Leon puts everything into bringing together a good mix of games, traders, living history reenactors, people giving talks, and goes the extra mile when needed, should problems develop with the hot food situation (never an easy part of putting on a show). The games put on, both demo and participation, regularly include a selection that are, either to a very good gaming standard, or to show case standard normally seen at somewhere like Partizan - if people are interested in visuals. Participation-wise, there's been some really great games over the years, in various scales and periods, utilising some interesting, fun rules. Should attendees require help finding overnight accommodation; if I remember correctly, I think Leon is able to offer suggestions, nearby to the venue - something to ask, if needed.

  12. Those things looked great when Empress released them but I never got to see one on any of the blogs I follow. Seems you remedied that. :)

Nice piece - hope your participants at the con appreciate your hard work.

    1. Thanks Dai…..I’m sure many people look at the model and think that would be a nice idea’ the guy I bought it off secondhand said he had bought it ago but it was a project that he never got round to. I’m glad I was able to build it up👍
