A diversion to the Spanish Civil War ….

After our SYW battle from the weekend before we had another Saturday battle planned in. Martin has been building a Spanish Civil war collection in 10mm and we agreed to give this a run out in the dungeon. Unfortunately not a period I know much about and with my RCW collection it currently feels like a project ‘too far’ ? Anyway Martin developed a simple scenario to utilise all the available forces. Out of interest we would be using bolt action with some slight modifications to ranges, basically reducing hand held guns but keeping movement the same to give a fast paced battle.

Very roughly based on a real map but perhaps more like generic northern Spain, I took this photo the evening before you may notice it doesn’t have any buildings in the villages. These were supplied by Martin and you will see them in the following photos. The nationalists will be attacking from the south/left, the republicans defending and attempting to prevent a break through towards Bilbao. With the caveat that I don’t know much about the period the photos will have to describe the action.
My republican force, the International Brigade digs in to hold the river crossings.
Huge convoys of Nationalist infantry arrive in trucks.
Republicans are also holding the village of Vallesa
The international brigade are sent forward to block the valley road, antitank guns by the church open up but one is knocked out by accurate mortar fire
Another antitank gun by Vallesa is also knocked out by artillery firing across the valley from San Christoval, but not before it was able to knock out the leading nationalist tank.
A fierce fight in the narrow valley blocking the advance
Some much needed Republican reserves arrive, in the middle distance our artillery opens up counter battery fire across the valley
Armed with Molotov cocktails my infantry manage to knock out one of the advancing tanks but they are then attacked from across the river
Nationalists advance across the open valley past the village a big danger they will overrun our position
Things are looking thin close to the bridge as well, infantry support is being rushed from the village to support the defence
Finally after several failed activation test the Republican tanks find their way to the battlefield bolstering my right and with the support of some cavalry the nationalist advance is thrown back hoorah !
But things are going badly by the bridges as the international brigade has been wiped out, the leading enemy tank is burning on the bridge hit by one of our BT6’s
With the second enemy tank now burning things briefly improve but there is too much enemy infantry to hold here
Stalemate in the centre, the nationalists face a tough fight if they want to cross the river and assault the village, at this point we drew things to a close with a draw, the republicans have clearly lost the left flank and the bridges, but thrown back the assault on their right. With the centre in stalemate a draw seemed a good result for the Republicans.
One point of note the Nationalist general had been fighting on the left, with his forces thrown back in confusion he was very lucky to escape with his life, one failed activation by the republican cavalry saved his skin as he hides behind the village.

A fun diversion into the SCW thanks Martin for pulling the collection together.

Thanks as always for checking in 👍

  2. A lovely looking and sounding game Matt…
The Spanish Civil War is a quite colourful and interesting war…
Very much like the Russian Civil War you get tanks, trains, cavalry and planes…

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thanks Aly, as mention not a period I know too much about. Having seen Phil’s collection of course I have thought about it a few times ?

  3. A mighty fine looking game, table and toys there. I mostly use Bolt Action for my SCW games it adds to the often sometimes chaotic nature of the fighting. Where Anarchist militia are involved I usually give them one less order dice, to give the Nationalist force a C&C advantage.

    1. Anarchists! Do they cross rivers?

    3. Thanks Phil. The bolt action rules worked well at this scale each brigade was given a dice using it the same way we use for our 15mm battles.

  4. Nice game to play, I'll make the artillery less epic next time. Need more trucks

    1. And I've picked up the French naps bag, its about a kilo, although some of the figs are ropey. Should get 2 or 3 regiments out of it

    2. Thanks Martin worked well. Yes the artillery was perhaps a little too effect on both sides 👍

  5. Nice looking game and with the 10mm it would also be a good setting for the Blitzkrieg Commander IV rules if wanting to represent a bigger action.

  6. Very nice looking game, Matt. I also have little knowledge of this war, except for some Germans being involved in the Condor Legion (a pretty cool name too).

    1. Thanks Dean, as others have said a very interesting period with a great variety of equipment and armour. If I didn’t already have RCW it would be an option for future projects ?

  7. This is a period I have never played, but I can see the attraction. 10mm seems like a good scale to do something like this in as there are some lovely figures around and you can quickly assemble forces.

    1. Thanks Lawrence, the 10 mm certainly gave a mobile and interesting battle , that mix of infantry company’s and light armour. As mentioned above if I didn’t have RCW I would be thinking about a new project

  8. Quick comment to all who are commenting. SCW is fun to play in 10mm. Pendraken have a massive collection of troops, Moroccans to International Brigade and Carlists to Anarchists, and tank types.
It was the war of the Molotov cocktail, good for attacking tanks.
Generally the republicans (good guys) had best tanks and lost all the battles, badly. Nationalists (evil fascist types) only had anti infantry tanks, but better troops - Franco came over from Africa with the Spanish African army - and better command and control, so won all the battles. It's where the Germans and Italians learnt how to fight WW2.

  10. Fine looking set up, Matt, and something completely unexpected from you and Martin. SCW looks great in 10mm especially with the terrain and buildings. You use Bolt Action for this period? What are you unit sizes? Battalions?

    1. No, we kept the 10 men to a section and had 2 platoons per side., plus about 10 tanks each and couple of artillery batteries

    2. Thanks Jon, bolt action worked well and we used it pretty much the same as we use it for our 15mm late war battles, each die ordering a small ‘company’ or troop of tanks etc.

  11. Great looking game on all levels. I did play the SCW for sometime, but in the end 'transferred' over to the AVBCW purely so that I can be more creative on what toys I got onto the table! 10mm for me too and BCKII (or IV).

  12. Surprising post from you ! Great looking game and a draw us better than a loss, if I were going to do an inter war conflict it would be Spanish Civil war, most days anyway, although I do of course fancy the Russian Revolution!

    1. Thanks Iain, obviously as I already have RCW the SCW seems a bit of the same, but it was nice to give Martin’s collection a run out.

  14. Looks like a good game and a reasonable result for the Republicans. The Republicans did win a couple of battles - they held onto Madrid despite the Nationalists arriving on the outskirts quite early in the war AND Franco being pretty determined to take it, and they also beat the Italians quite badly when they attacked at Gaudalajara in another attempt to take Madrid - but Martin is correct in the main, they lost almost all the battles, including several ill-conceived, unnecessary and pointless attacks such as the Battle of the Ebro.

  15. Very good looking game as I've come to expect when I visit this blog. Interesting too to see Bolt Action played in a different scale - sounds like it worked out just fine though.

  16. Ooh, glad I realized I had missed this post somehow. The table looked great, Martin's troops looked very evocative in battle....love the truck horde in the beginning. Seemed a pretty balanced outcome for both sides. The SCW I have is in 28mm and needs to be expanded, maybe in the upcoming year.
