Napoleonic French and Back of Beyond British

Seems to be lots of stuff going at the moment, jumping between games and projects but I have been working away in the background on the next french unit for the Peninsular project.

I think I am getting my head around painting Napoleonic French, they are not the best by a long way but I’m happy with the result. These have the flag of the 33rd but the plumes aren’t correct. Think I will push on to a third unit then take a group Brigade shot.
These British infantry had been started ages ago but with our Back of Beyond battle last weekend I pushed them right to the front of the painting queue. These are Woodbine figures a couple of units plus command figures. I already have suitable armoured cars and at least one artillery piece.
They also have a machine gun as support., annoyingly when I based them I put them on separate bases, seemed like a good idea at the time ? I have another unit of British, some converted Turks as Sikhs and a few other units which will be converted Turks into misc mercenaries. I also have some tribesmen I would like to get into the queue.

Well that’s it for now, more painting hopefully this weekend

Keep on painting πŸ‘

  1. Who are you kidding? Your French look GREAT, Matt! Those grenadiers have large, Gallic noses. With all of your games of late, I am surprised you had time to crank these two units out.

    1. The warlord sculpts are really nice with quite a bit of character even if it is a little repetitive, now I have a box of the Perry elites I will be looking to see if I can mix and match just a couple of figures to break things up, few heads swop etc… little and often as always on the progress front

  4. Nicely done, its interesting to note how having a deadline causes one to 'focus' on a lagging project!

  7. Nicely turned out Frenchies and Tommies there Matt, I wouldn't worry about the plumes as long as they have the correct amount of buttonsπŸ˜‚

    1. Oh dear you’ve caught me out I think the 33rd may have had one less button on the cuff ?

    1. Thanks Keith I have been using the very useful Perry guide which comes with their plastic sets. I picked the plume only to find I didn’t have the right flag. Well never mind πŸ‘

  9. Plumes? Buttons? Who cares? Frogs & Brits are just fine, though I'd rebase the machine-gun if I were you.

  10. Lovely work Matt, and I can recall French voltigeurs had a variety of plume colours so it works well to my eye.

  11. Good work on your figures!
I especially like the Woodbine Brits, re: Back of Beyond I’m thinking of playing some Skirmish with Aussies vs Bolos set around Arkhangel 1919 one day 😊
Also about basing your HMG team I may be able to help you a bit see my post below on ‘inset’ bases...

  13. Nice brushwork on both the French and English groups. It is fun to see a rush of figures completed when partially done groups 'stared' before.

  14. Splendid toys Matt…
The British must have seemed quite simple after the French…
The plumes look fine to me… whenever I do a bit of research into a French Napoleonic unit I tend to find two or three variations in uniform details… I just go for the prettiest 😁

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thanks Aly you have reassured me on my plumes. As you say often sources show some variation, and really they would have them when on campaign I’m sure
