Napoleonic riflemen

Well there is not much point wargaming the Peninsular war without having a unit of British Riflemen. Having bought a box of the warlord 95th sometime ago I also ended up with a secondhand set off eBay. On the basis that we are likely to see the collection in smaller skirmish actions initially I kept all of the riflemen on single bases but have some movement trays on order. In a classic wargamers conundrum I spent ages thinking about 95th vs 60th, in the end I split the the 32 figures I had.

The 95th Foot
The 60th Foot
I have to say these Warlord figures were a pleasure to paint and beautiful cleanly sculpted figures. These give me a range of options depending on the size of battle we might be playing.

I braved the cold weather on Friday for a cycle and as I know a few of you enjoy the landscape pictures I stopped to take one looking towards ‘Blencathra’ with a dusting of snow.

I am determined to keep up progress on the Napoleonics so I was prepping the next British unit whilst watching the Rugby on Saturday……oh dear, at least we beat the French in the Peninsular !

Thanks for checking in

Matt

  1. Fine figures there Matt, looking forward to many deeds of daring-do by Crump's Rifles. Good to see you out and about again too, nice landscape picture too. As to defeat by the cheese eating surrender monkeys, a national disgrace!

  2. Fine work on both units but I prefer the look of the 60th, due to the grey trousers and red cuffs etc. Also I always seem to see the 95th! Good to see you getting out on the bike too with a nice shot of the local countryside.

Well France were simply superb and England just didn't show up on the day. You just had to admire how well the French played, which at times was sublime. I think England will come out fighting against Ireland which could be a cracker.

    1. Thanks Steve, if I bump into some more riflemen at a show cheap I might pick them up other wise they are good for now. If ever the term ‘stuffed’ can be used Saturday was the day !

  3. Lovely toys Matt...
I also prefer the 60th... the red facings really work well with the green uniforms.

    All the best Aly

  4. Nice work Matt. As for the sport, an alien world to me, although I was hoping to hear the last of the crisp seller.

  7. They look great and a good idea to split them and have both the 95th and 60th

    1. Thanks Jon…..the Lake Diteict even when cold is beautiful. As to the number of bikes isn’t that like asking a lady their age ? 😀 if you must know 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲 if you include the training bike which is permanently setup on my trainer.

  9. Great work Matt, I have the same set of Warlord riflemen in my War of 1812 collection. I actually think the 95th have the better looking uniform, but I did the 60th as well! Nice image although it looks a bit chilly! Your comment on beating the French reminds me of a scene from Yes, Prime Minister revolving around a visit by the French president ....Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey have just had a conversation which concluded with Sir Humphrey explaining the British had been forced to spell the name of the Concorde aircraft the French way, with an E on the end. The PM asks, " When was the last time we got our own way with the French?" And the Private Secretary Bernard pipes up "Battle of Waterloo, 1815!"

    1. Thanks Keith, the warlord figures are some of their best I think. Yes it was cold….thankfully you don’t need to go back to 1815 for when we last beat them at rugby, but Saturday one commentator said was our worst ever defeat by them 🙁

  12. Nice solution on the 95th v 60th conundrum Matt, and beautifully painted. I have been busy with work this week so missed that rugby result. At least we have our Eddie back for a while, until the shine wears off him here again as it inevitably does with most coaches after four or five years.

    1. Thanks Stew the sitting position using feet to steady the barrel is based on the relevant manual from the time although no idea if it was ever used in reality ?
