Battle for Smirnoff : Russian Civil War

For my next venture into cyber lockdown gaming I set up a small Russian Civil War game. Both Red and White forces are in need of Vodka supplies for their troops. A stock has been located in the small village of Smirnoff and both local commanders have sent a force to capture the much needed alcohol.

In this scenario three objectives have been placed on the halfway line of the battlefield, unknown to both sides one contains the Vodka , one is empty and one a bomb set to go off when opened, so each side must decide to capture and hold the objective but not necessarily open it immediately. We had six turns as per a standard bolt action game to capture and hold.

The reds advance from the south, their commander in this game carries the ‘Red Flag’ they also have the benefit of the mobile support of the Rolls Royce armoured car.
The rest of the red force under the watchful eye of a commissar advances on the left. We are developing special rules for characters in the these games, so the commissar can be ordered like a normal unit, but has the power to remove all the pins from a unit but to do this he must shoot one of the unit to get them back in line!
The whites don’t have any armour but do have a Howitzer which they set up on the road. They are supported by an orthodox Russian priest who also has the power to boost the courage of units but with out the loss of life.
Elite Red Infantry take cover from behind the fuel truck
The Officers regiment follows their commanding officer towards the centre objective, the crates use across the road
The whites are also making progress on the right and receiving much support from the Priest, eventually they are first to get to an objective, the one just beyond the bushes. After spending a turn deciding whether to open it or not it proves to be the Vodka, this suddenly changes the nature of the battle as both sides swarm all available forces to this side of the battlefield
The commissar orders the elite infantry on the left to charge the objective and they duly wipe out the defenders, but they are now isolated and must now hold against the odds
All the white forces can be seen running across the table
The reds lay down covering fire to slow the move
But the Reds are only just clinging on to the objective and there is one more turn to go !
Covering fire but it may be too late
Charging in the last turn the whites under the watchful eye of their commanding officer claim the Vodka and victory,
Na Zdorovie to the Tsar !
Once again we kept the set up and game fairly simple and it provided  a very pleasant distraction

Back to painting for now but we payed another game I will blog in a day or so.

  2. Lovely table Matt. Are they an upgraded version of the boards that you took to Phoenix last year with the garden centre matting?

    1. Thanks Norm.....not upgraded the same ones. Yes with garden matting, they have proved more robust than I expected and still provide a reasonable appearance.
