With my son still at home and after the stout defence by the French in the previous battle Wellesley (apparently recovered from his death) was persuaded to attack the strong second French position. Again I so.not run through the detail of the battle which is adequately covered on Wiki. In essence Delaborde had successfully pulled back to what was an even stronger position. Wellesley again attempted to out flank the position with Portuguese troops under Col Trant and the 3rd Brigade under Gen Ferguson. He led the main assault. The terrain was very difficult with the front of the French position cut by deep rocky gullies. The British assaulted up these after being initially repulsed they made it onto the plateau but before the position was outflanked the French managed to withdraw in order.

Battle of Rolica (Afternoon) : Commands and Colors
The initial set up for the battle, with the Portuguese and 2nd Brigade looking to outflank the position. With the terrain constraints this is a tough scenario for the British. But the french need to avoid coming off the ridge and being defeated in pieces
Action down both flanks where there is a bit more room to move
French reinforcements ððð
Portuguese again prove more aggressive down the flank but the French squares clings on
After some fierce fighting (the British suffered from some dreadful dice rolling) the french took the initiative driving the attack back at the sharp point of their bayonets
At this point the French picked up their winning flag taking the battle 5-3. You can see the French cavalry hiding behind the ridge having been mauled dreadfully by the Portuguese.
Another fun game, we resolved a few of the rules we had got wrong first game which made the light infantry more powerful. It would have been much closer if Wellesley could roll the dice properly, at least he didn’t get killed again ! Next up Vimiero depending on Young Wellesley’s enthusiasm ðĪŠ

Looks like fun
ReplyDeleteThank you sir it was especially for the French !
DeleteSounds like great fun! Not getting killed is a very good starting point!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
It was a tough scenario for the brits and the bad dice didn’t help !
Deletethis looked fun. Happy Christmas
ReplyDeleteA good time....made better by the brandy ð
DeleteA hex based boardgame ...... winner! :-)
ReplyDeleteMatt, looks like an ideal solution for when your sons visits.
Who knows Norm I might be converted yet ð starting simple first
DeleteYou will soon be hooked! I half expect to see Napoleonic armies in either 6mm or 10mm forming up to play CCN with miniatures. Very good to see that your son is enjoying these games.
ReplyDeleteSince we can play more then one CC game in a session, we play the same scenario twice and switch sides for the second game. Largest sum of banners scored in the two games combined is declared the winner of the session.
We’ve had fun with the first two games, i would be lying if I said I hadn’t been at least thinking about 6 mm Napoleonics ðĪ a dangerous place to go ! Now if they brought out SYW i would already have the figures !
DeleteFun lookin game - and stout French reinforcements too, Matt!
ReplyDeleteNot sure which I prefer the game or the reinforcements ?
DeleteHa! a lots of fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michal ð
DeleteGreat to see you getting in another game with your son Matt:). Shame that the Anglo-Portugese aren't doing too well at present...
ReplyDeleteWe have certainly enjoyed the two games so far and looking forward to vimiero
DeleteGood game, you are so organised whenever we play board war games I never even think of photos and AARs, very good post.
ReplyDelete6mm Napoleonics excellent!
Thanks ....too kind ð having googled a bit I can see many people have had the same thoughts and ideas using C&C but transferring it to more figure based gaming it has some attractions.
DeleteLooks like you are getting into the swing of CnC Matt. As mentioned (I think) Julian and I used 28mm figures when we played this game - I think we used his hex based mat etc so there was room for units comprising 8 or 12 figures per hex - worked well!
ReplyDeleteHaving chekced the web lots of people are playing at every scale. I may have a go using my old 1/72 figures, although I do have quite the right variety of Portuguese troops. The way us Wargames think ......I am also considering using the blocks in alternative larger games, this may never happen ðĪ
DeleteNice outing Matt, a prompt for me to get my Jacobite rising out of the box, reading through some of the comments I would love to turn it into miniature but tartan.... hhhmmm. Some useful solo ideas out there.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Stu
Perhaps if you go 6 mm I don’t think you need to worry about tartan !
