The view looking up from the welsh side ! According to the details inside the Castle a secondary ring wall was also conceived but not constructed ?
Must have taken some Labour to put those windows through the extremely thick walls ! Despite being a national trust Castle details on the Castle itself were slightly lacking, the focus more on the more recent inhabitants.
The Castle does have an excellent and atmospheric dungeon and lots of opportunity to dress up π
We have now headed further south to Caerleon near Newport to visit some of the excellent Roman remains. These were actually the inspiration for the trip when I saw them on U tube but realised I had never visited them. The small town is well worth a visit with the well preserved amphitheatre
One can definately imagine the gladiators fighting it out here
There is a small but interesting museum
Some well preserved baths used by the troops
And a significant barracks complex all of these within easy walking distance and all free to visit π if you get the chance there is also a lovely and esoteric cafe in the Main Street.
Have been to Chirk a couple of times but not Caerleon will make a note of it. Your cramming a bit of history in already.
ReplyDeleteCaerleon definately worth a visit also heading to Caerwent later in the week, but another Castle today π
DeleteWales is very much a castle theme park, went to university in Bangor, castles everywhere
ReplyDeleteA long history of fighting, insurrection and invasion π
DeleteVery cool! We are short on castles here in America. Nice pics!
ReplyDeleteThanks Stew yes Wales has a long history, we are staying in Newport and would say probabaly a dozen castles within about 20 miles π
DeleteAnother fine travelogue, Matt!
ReplyDeleteBack out today for more....π
DeleteWhat a splendid looking place, another one for the list.
ReplyDeleteCaerleon definately worth a visit for those interested in Roman history, heading to Caerwent as well later in the week.
DeleteCaerleon is on my Must Visit list. We didn't get that far south during holidays there as a kid, but the north is certainly full of castles.
ReplyDeleteIf you're ever in Norfolk I recommend a visit to Burgh Castle which has an impressive set of Roman Saxon Shore fortifications, and Caister by Norwich for the Venta Icenorum site.
Worth a trip if you get the chance we are heading to Caerwent as well tomorrow π
DeleteMatt,
ReplyDeleteGreetings, Sir, just found your blog, and I’m really enjoying it, particularly your WWII campaigns. I just read every single one of your Blitzkrieg Commander battle reports; they’re amazing, and very inspirational!
Along those lines, sorry to be a bother, but I’ve got a few questions about your BKC setup, regarding table size, distances used, and unit tables of organization, if you don’t mind. I will check back here, or you can reach me at bigjackmac at Hotmail dot com.
Again, sorry to be a bother, but I’m really looking to get back to some BKC gaming after seeing these, just can’t seem to work out exactly how you’re doing it. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
V/R,
Jack
Thanks Jack for joining and your interest, glad you enjoyed our BKC we haven’t played for a while but it will be back soon, really happy to answer questions, I’ll send you a mail mattπ
DeleteThanks Matt, received and replied! Can’t wait for your return to BKC, love Caen and East Front.
DeleteV/R,
Jack
